Africans are hard-working, creative, innovative people who have the capacity to move forward more effectively if we can give them a hand up. Help us help themselves by providing underprivileged children opportunities to become self-reliant by strengthening their families and communities.

The nation of Japan has held an emotional memorial services for the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck viciously 1 year ago, killing more than 19,000 souls and also unleashing a deadly nuclear crisis. Along the tsunami-battered north-eastern coast memorial ceremonies, marked the precise moment the gigantic magnitude-8.9 earthquake hit - 2.46pm on March 11, 2011. The main ceremony was held in Tokyo at the famous National Theatre, attended by revered Japan's Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda also. Spanning the entire country, a minute's silence was also observed and synchronized at the exact moment the quake hit (5.46am GMT) time. "There will be more challenges ahead of us. All in our nation need to think about the people living in this area and I expect all of us to assist them and that we never forget," Emperor Akihito said to the masses. "The experience must be handed down to future generations to make our country a much safer place." In the exposed coastal town of Rikuzentakata, a smooth siren sounded and a Buddhist priest in a purple robe rang a huge bell at a damaged temple overlooking a barren area where houses once stood thriving. At the same time in Tokyo, the emperor and Mr Noda stood silently and patiently with 100s of other people at a memorial service. The earthquake was the strongest recorded in Japan's entire history, and set off a tsunami that towered more than 65ft in some spots along the vulnerable coast, destroying 1000s of homes and wreaking widespread destruction also. Some 325,000 people left homeless in the disaster still unfortunately remain in temporary housing. While much of the debris has been gathered into massive piles, very little rebuilding has begun to take shape there. "I wish I could go back to my old house and get back our normal life again," said Hyakuaiko Konno, a 64-year-old woman from the Ishinomaki coast who has been living in temporary housing for the past 7 months and counting. The government said the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where 3 reactor cores melted down after the tsunami knocked out their vital cooling systems, is stable for now and that radiation coming from the plant has subsided significantly as well. But the plant's chief acknowledged to curious journalists visiting the complex recently - that it remains in a fragile state, and makeshift equipment - some mended unprofessionally with tape - could be seen keeping crucial systems running ahead. An anti-nuclear protest is also planned in downtown Tokyo amid growing public opposition and worry to atomic power in the wake of the disaster, the worst since Chernobyl in 1986 - FACT. Only 2 of Japan's 54 reactors are now running and producing energy while those shut down for regular inspections undergo special tests to check their existing ability to withstand similar disasters. They could all likely go offline by the end of April if none of them are restarted before then. The Japanese government has officially pledged to reduce reliance on nuclear power, which supplied about 30% of the nation's total energy needs before the disaster struck. However, it says some nuclear plants must be restarted to meet Japan's desperate energy needs during the transition period. Mr Noda has indeed acknowledged failures in the government's response to the disaster, being too slow in relaying key information when it really mattered and believing too much in "a myth of safety" about nuclear power stations. "We can no longer make the excuse that what was unpredictable and outside our imagination has happened," he said on camera. By Mazoe News Editor - Ryan Chimene less )
