FAO's Goodwill Ambassadors are speaking with one voice in an urgent appeal on behalf of more the more than one billion people living in chronic hunger worldwide. These celebrities from the worlds of entertainment, sport, fashion and science are helping to build momentum in advance of the World Summit on Food Security (the Hunger Summit) taking place in Rome from 16 to 18 November. Pierre Cardin, Carl Lewis, Roberto Baggio, Anggun, Dionne Warwick, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gong Li, Noa, Ronan Keating, Fanny Lu have all strongly stated that the plight of these billion undernourished people is morally unacceptable. They are posting messages of support on their official Web pages, extending their outreach through twitter and other social media, linking to the newly established online petition for change, or encouraging their fans and associates to support community food production projects by making an online donation. Many of the Goodwill Ambassadors are recording and distributing statements on the eradication of hunger. Video clips to promote the Hunger Summit have been recorded by Nobel Prize Laureate Rita Levi Montalcini and Mexican rock group Maná. (c)FAO www.fao.org less )

America is one of the world’s wealthiest nations. And yet, we remain the only country in the developed world where some 49 million people go hungry despite sufficient resources, technology and farmable land to provide nutritious, affordable food for all. As the economy continues to weaken, millions more join the ranks every day. Hunger is detrimental to health, productivity, and learning—especially for the 17 million hungry American children—posing serious economic, social and cultural implications for this country. Hungry in America is a feature-length documentary that presents an unflinching look at the root causes behind this sobering reality and asks tough questions about why a nation that could feed all of its citizens has failed to do so. + info: http://www.hungryinamerica.net/ less )

Direct from Mozambique, Africa: Mario Mabede of Save the Children says subsidies meant to calm recent food price protests are not what's needed to effectively address widespread hunger in his country. Mario points to 3 strategies that will build up the rural poor and in doing, will build up the whole country: 1) Teach improved skills in farming 2) Facilitate better access to markets 3) Share information on how to prepare nutritious food for their families & how to protect them from disease. Background: In September, rises in the price of bread and fuel set off protests in the cities of Mozambique. Headlines evoked memories of the global wave of food protests during the food price crisis of 2007-08. Now, concerns over corn prices are making news. But debate over food prices too often misses an important point--the world must invest in the poor and vulnerable in order to reduce global hunger. Fighting child hunger: What works? October 16, 2010 was World Hunger Day. It is a yearly worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger. With nearly one billion people still suffering from food shortages around the globe, the world must take a united stand against hunger, the United Nations said today, marking World Food Day. The number of the world's hungry has dipped slightly from its record high last year, but "we are continually reminded that the world's food systems are not working in ways that ensure food security for the most vulnerable members of our societies," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message on the Day.
