In the past 10 years, more than 30 million children have been taken out of child labour. But according to the ILO's Global Report, today an estimated 215 million children are still working, on the streets, in farm fields, in some of the worst and most hazardous forms of work. Integrated national policies to protect children, get them out of work and into school have made an impact, moving the international community closer to its goal of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016. One way forward can be found in India, and the world's largest school lunch program. A report on child and bonded labour in Afghan brick kilns, commissioned by the ILO and conducted by Samuel Hall Consulting, has found more than half of the workers surveyed were children, with the majority under 14, and that the brick kilns rely almost entirely on bonded labour. Most children began working between seven and eight years old, and by the age of nine almost 80 per cent of children are working. The brick kilns rely almost entirely on debt bondage and workers and their families are tied to a kiln by the need to pay off loans taken for basic necessities. The survey, "Buried in Bricks: Rapid Assessment of Bonded Labour in Afghan Brick Kilns", was carried out in two provinces of Afghanistan, Nangarhar and Kabul. Eradicating child labour is difficult, but some employers in India are finding a way. And along the way to eliminating child labour, employers are also discovering that it makes good business sense as well.

When you think of what trade unions do, rescuing children from illegal child labour is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. But in India's Tamil Nadu State, six trade unions have come together to eradicate child labour, especially in its most hazardous forms. In the district of Erode, nearly a hundred children have been removed from auto and motorcycle repair shop work and are now back in school.

In 2006 war devastated areas of Southern Lebanon. In recent years, the pace of reconstruction has been enhanced by a new program that trains young people at risk for long term unemployment in job skills in the building and construction industries. One of the brightest prospects from the new program is also one of the most unlikely; she's on track to become southern Lebanon's first woman electrician.
